Coronavirus Update

Updated: April 7, 2020

Dear Vanguard Family,

I hope you are staying healthy and safe as the state-wide shutdown for the coronavirus continues.

Since I last updated this page, you may or may not be aware of the following developments…

  • President Trump has extended the social distancing guidelines from March 31 to April 30 anticipating the number of cases of and deaths from the coronavirus will peak in the next couple of weeks
  • Governor Newsom requested that all California public schools use a “distance-learning model” for the remainder of this academic year
  • Our local school districts have followed suit by closing schools through the end of May in order to continue using the online “distance-learning model”

In light of these new developments, I have sought counsel from our deacons and the principal of Freedom Middle School where we hold our public worship services.  Here are some answers to the most common questions people have as this health crisis continues….

WILL WE BE MEETING FOR GOOD FRIDAY AND EASTER SERVICES?

With schools closed and the number of U.S. deaths from the virus continuing to climb, we unfortunately will NOT be able to hold our Good Friday and Easter services.  In lieu of these services, I will upload a 15-minute devotional video for you to watch on Good Friday and a 30-minute home bible study video for you to watch with your family on Easter Sunday morning.  These videos can be found on the “Sermons” page of our website or in the Apple Podcasts app.

WHEN WILL BE ABLE TO RESUME WEEKLY WORSHIP SERVICES AND CHURCH EVENTS?

At this point, it’s difficult to say.  IF the President lifts his social distancing guidelines after April 30 and the Governor loosens his restrictions on group gatherings, the SOONEST, BEST-CASE SCENARIO would be in early to mid-May.  At the end of the month, I’ll consult with our church leaders and re-evaluate what our local, state and federal governments are asking us to do.  In the meantime, we’ll have to remain flexible and “wait and see”.

IN THE MEANTIME, WHAT SHOULD WE DO FOR WORSHIP ON SUNDAYS?

During this hiatus, I have been uploading a home bible study video to our website every Saturday evening for our church to watch at home on Sunday mornings.  All you need is a smartphone, tablet or computer along with your bible, the downloadable PDF handout and something to write with to get the most out of these videos.  They can be found on the “Sermons” page of our website or in the Apple Podcasts app.

WHERE DO I SEND MY TITHES AND OFFERINGS SINCE WE'RE NOT MEETING FOR CORPORATE WORSHIP?

If this global crisis has not diminished your income below your cost of living, I want to encourage you to remain faithful with your tithes and offerings.  Like your own family and household, our church still has bills to pay, commitments to fulfill and needs to meet even in the midst of a pandemic like this.  While our corporate worship services are suspended, you can send your tithes and offerings to Vanguard using one of the following methods…

Although these are difficult times, those of us who have personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ can be confident He is “working ALL things together for good” (Ro. 8:28) so that we can be “conformed to the image of His Son” (vs. 29).
